Open Position – Biologist

Acorn Environmental (Acorn) is seeking an experienced and motivated biologist who is looking to accelerate their career by assisting with a range of exciting projects. This position involves learning a niche consulting market, supporting Native American tribes along the West Coast with environmental compliance for land management and development projects. For this position, a moderate to low-level of travel is anticipated.

A Day in the Life

As a small business, our staff are constantly collaborating in real-time to meet project deadlines as a team. Typical tasks include but are not limited to: checking in with colleagues; researching and writing biological reports or sections of environmental impact studies; communicating with clients, subconsultants, and/or regulatory agencies; and conducting reconnaissance surveys of local project sites. Staff will be assigned a mentor to establish a career development and training plan.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in environmental consulting or a closely related field
  • Performing field surveys for special-status species and habitat assessment in California
  • Conducting pre-construction surveys, environmental awareness training, and construction monitoring
  • Writing Biological Assessments/Biological Resource Assessments, and/or biological sections of NEPA or CEQA documents
  • Using GPS units for field data collection
  • Excellent writing skills (a writing sample will be requested)
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Working independently and with attention to detail
  • Valid Driver’s License and the ability to travel periodically
  • Ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for several hours and carry field equipment.

Preferred Experience

  • Conducting wetland delineations and writing wetland delineation reports
  • Creating maps and figures using GIS
  • Preparing permitting applications (Clean Water Act Section 404/401, California Department of Fish and Wildlife Streambed Alteration Agreement)
