Senior Biologist

Acorn Environmental (Acorn) is seeking a senior biologist who is looking to accelerate their career by assisting with a range of exciting projects. This position involves learning a niche consulting market in supporting Native American tribes with environmental compliance for fee-to-trust, land management/planning, natural resources, and development projects.

We are experts in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), tribal environmental policies and ordinances, and related environmental laws and regulations. Our growing list of active projects includes tribal fee-to-trust acquisitions; water, wastewater, and transportation infrastructure; affordable housing; mixed-use and commercial development; recreation facilities; and restoration/conservation. Our office is located in El Dorado Hills, California, but the majority of our staff enjoy working remotely.

A Day in the Life

As a small business, our staff are constantly collaborating in real-time to meet project deadlines as a team. Typical tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating and assisting with listed species surveys, wetland delineations, botanical inventories, habitat mapping, and other fieldwork as needed;
  • Reviewing or preparing biological assessments for consultation with the USFWS and NMFS;
  • Assisting with permitting in accordance with sections 401 and 404 of the Clean Water Act;
  • Reviewing and writing sections of larger environmental compliance documents in accordance with CEQA and NEPA;
  • Writing and reviewing technical reports, including summarizing research and survey results;
  • Assisting with Section 7 consultation;
  • Word processing and editorial tasks, such as document formatting, pdf compilation, and conducting reference checks; and
  • Checking in and collaborating with colleagues.

Required Qualifications to Apply

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, ecology, soil science, botany, wetland science, or similar environmental field;
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States;
  • Must be a current resident in or willing to relocate to the greater Sacramento area of California;
  • At least 7 years of experience in conducting listed species surveys, wetland delineations, botanical inventories, and habitat mapping;
  • At least 7 years of experience in environmental consulting and in writing biological resources reports and environmental compliance documents in accordance with CEQA and NEPA;
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and writing skills (a writing sample will be requested);
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite

Starting compensation for this position will vary depending on the experience and educational background of the selected candidate but is expected to range between $90,000 and $135,000 annually.
